My name is Martin Elliott (Marty) now retired after a lifetime career in Education. I am married to Viv and we live in Papamoa, Tauranga.
25 years ago, as a Secondary Principal I was approached by a local Funeral Director to be the MC at a funeral service for the father of one of my pupils. As an experienced public speaker, and with a strong sense of Community, I readily agreed to his request. I found the experience humbling and uplifting, and so began my journey as a Celebrant.
I have always considered it a privilege and honour to be asked to be a Celebrant at a family Ceremony. It’s a time when you get very close to a family and assist them in their time of need. This is especially so when a family member passes away.
As a Celebrant I always explain to the family that while I will advise and guide them, and make suggestions; at the end of the day the final decisions are theirs to make. This is their Ceremony not mine.
Ceremonies require people with a variety of personal and professional attributes. You do not want to entrust a special occasion to someone who creates mayhem and destroys the memory of the occasion for a lifetime.
Confirmation of Excellence
During my journey as a Celebrant my need to self review and to aspire to be better than I used to be directed me to the CELEBRANTS ASSOCIATION OF NEW ZEALAND. This organisation has as it focus the ongoing professional development of Celebrants in NZ in the pursuit of excellence.
I am a member of CANZ and have been approved to be a VCANZ, meaning I have been assessed by this professional body to be a Celebrant of Excellence.
My VCANZ number is 1221 and my Celebrant number with BDM is 52107
